MISSION AND PROCESS
Capital for Children operates as a component fund of the Greater Washington Community Foundation, the region’s largest local funder that manages hundreds of charitable giving funds on behalf of individuals, families, and businesses.
Members make financial contributions that are pooled together and distributed as grants to nonprofits. We also hold one fundraiser per year to benefit our nonprofit partners. We identify potential nonprofits for funding, conduct thorough due diligence, and make multi-year grants to selected organizations.
Capital for Children’s philanthropic activities are guided by our belief that everyone deserves a chance to succeed. We invest in nonprofits that provide resources, opportunities, and support to help children, youth, and young adults improve their academic performance, develop to their full potential, achieve self-sufficiency, and thrive.
Throughout the year, our members and staff identify nonprofits for potential funding. On a rolling basis, we invite nonprofits to participate in our selection process, which consists of a review of organizational, programmatic, and financial documents provided by the nonprofit and a meeting(s) between Capital for Children staff/member(s) and the nonprofit’s Executive Director and Board Chair.
Capital for Children does not accept unsolicited proposals or letters of inquiry. Nonprofits are welcome to reach out with introductory information, but this does not have an impact on our selection criteria or funding decisions.
To be considered for a grant, an organization must:
